Overview

Welds are where most fabrication defects hide, and a single missed crack can turn into a leak or a failure years later. Effective welding inspection therefore depends on people who understand how welds are made, why defects form and which test will find them. This course gives inspectors and engineers a solid working knowledge of welding processes, joint preparation, welding procedures and the visual inspection that should happen before, during and after welding. It then introduces the main non-destructive testing methods used in oil, gas and petrochemical plants: penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic and radiographic testing, with a look at phased array and other advanced techniques. Participants learn the principles, capabilities and limits of each method, how to read inspection reports, and how to judge results against the acceptance criteria of common codes.

Objectives

  • Describe the main arc welding processes and their typical defects
  • Review welding procedure specifications and welder qualifications
  • Carry out visual inspection before, during and after welding
  • Explain the principles, strengths and limits of PT, MT, UT and RT
  • Select the right NDT method for a given joint and defect type
  • Interpret NDT reports against code acceptance criteria

Who should attend

Welding and QA/QC inspectors, inspection and materials engineers, fabrication supervisors, and engineers who review weld inspection results or manage contractors.

Training methodology

Theory is supported by physical weld samples with real defects, which participants inspect visually and measure with gauges. NDT demonstrations show penetrant and magnetic particle testing, and sample radiographs and ultrasonic records are interpreted in groups. Participants review a WPS and PQR for errors and match defects to likely causes. A final exercise asks teams to choose NDT methods for a set of joints and justify their choice. Throughout the course, the focus stays on what an inspector should check and record on site.
