Overview

In-service piping fails more often than vessels, mainly because it is long, varied and often hard to reach, and because corrosion under insulation, dead legs and injection points can thin it quickly in a few places. API 570 sets out how in-service metallic piping should be inspected, evaluated, repaired and altered, and many operators require their piping inspectors to hold the API 570 certification. This course covers the body of knowledge for the API 570 examination: API 570 itself, the inspection practices in API RP 574, the damage mechanisms in API RP 571, and the relevant parts of ASME B31.3, ASME Section V and Section IX and API RP 577 and 578. Participants practise the calculations for thickness, remaining life, inspection intervals, pressure testing and MAWP, and work through exam-style questions. The certification exam itself is administered by API, and candidates register with API separately.

Objectives

  • Navigate API 570 and its referenced codes quickly and accurately
  • Apply inspection practices for piping circuits and condition monitoring locations
  • Recognise damage mechanisms that affect process piping
  • Calculate required thickness, corrosion rate, remaining life and inspection intervals
  • Evaluate repairs, alterations and pressure tests to code
  • Apply welding and NDE requirements from ASME IX and V
  • Answer exam-style questions under time pressure

Who should attend

Piping inspectors and inspection engineers preparing for the API 570 examination, and integrity, maintenance and QA/QC engineers who need a working knowledge of in-service piping inspection.

Training methodology

The course follows the structure of the API 570 body of knowledge. Each code section is explained with worked examples, and participants solve calculation problems individually before reviewing them together as a group. Daily quizzes use open-book and closed-book questions in the exam format, so participants get used to finding answers in the codes quickly. A full mock exam on the last day measures readiness, and practical tips on code navigation and time management are given throughout.
