Overview

Inspecting every item of static equipment at fixed intervals wastes resources on low-risk items while high-risk ones can still fail between inspections. Risk-based inspection replaces calendar-driven plans with programmes built on the probability and consequence of failure, so inspection effort goes where it reduces risk most. This course follows the approach set out in API RP 580 and the calculation methods of API RP 581. Participants learn how to screen units, assign damage mechanisms, estimate probability of failure from damage factors and inspection effectiveness, and evaluate consequences of release in terms of safety, environment and business loss. They then use the resulting risk ranking to set inspection methods, coverage and dates. The course also covers data requirements, team roles and how to keep an RBI programme alive after the first study is complete.

Objectives

  • Explain the principles of RBI and its place in mechanical integrity
  • Plan an RBI study and define data requirements
  • Assign credible damage mechanisms to equipment and circuits
  • Estimate probability of failure using damage factors
  • Calculate consequence of failure for typical releases
  • Build a risk matrix and inspection plan from the results
  • Sustain and update an RBI programme over time
  • Communicate RBI decisions to operations and management

Who should attend

Inspection engineers, integrity and corrosion engineers, maintenance planners, process engineers and team leaders involved in setting inspection programmes for static equipment.

Training methodology

Participants carry out a simplified RBI study on a sample unit from start to finish. They group equipment into corrosion loops, assign damage mechanisms, calculate probability and consequence by hand using API 581 methods, and plot the results on a risk matrix. Short lectures introduce each step, and worked examples show common errors in data and assumptions. The final day turns risk results into an inspection plan that teams present and defend.
