Overview

Flare, vent and blowdown systems are the last line of defence when process pressure rises beyond control, and they must work every time, often after years of standing idle. They are also a growing environmental concern, as regulators and companies push to cut routine flaring and methane emissions. This course explains how these systems are designed, operated and maintained in line with API 521 and API 537. Participants learn how relief loads are identified and combined, how headers, knock-out drums, seals and flare tips are sized, and how radiation, noise and dispersion limits are checked. The course also covers depressurisation and blowdown, cold flare and low-temperature risks, purge and air ingress prevention, flare gas recovery and smokeless operation. Operating problems such as liquid carry-over, flashback, burnback and pilot failures are examined through real incidents.

Objectives

  • Explain the function and components of flare, vent and blowdown systems
  • Identify relief scenarios and estimate combined flare loads
  • Size headers, knock-out drums and seals using API 521 principles
  • Check radiation, noise and dispersion against limits
  • Apply depressurisation and blowdown requirements
  • Prevent air ingress, flashback and low-temperature brittle fracture
  • Reduce flaring through flare gas recovery and good operation
  • Troubleshoot common flare system problems

Who should attend

Process and safety engineers, operations supervisors, environmental engineers, and maintenance and inspection staff responsible for relief and flare systems.

Training methodology

Participants work through relief load and flare system calculations for a sample gas plant, including knock-out drum sizing and radiation checks. Incident investigations involving flare liquid carry-over and air ingress are analysed in groups. Photographs and videos of flare tips, seals and smoking flares support the operating sessions. A team exercise asks participants to propose a flaring reduction plan with estimated savings, and the course closes with a written assessment.
