Overview

Natural gas leaving the wellhead is rarely fit to sell. It may carry water, acid gases, heavy hydrocarbons, mercury and solids, any of which can cause corrosion, hydrates, off-specification product or safety incidents. This course explains how gas plants remove these components and recover valuable liquids along the way. Participants start with gas properties, phase behaviour and sales specifications, then study each step of a typical processing train: inlet separation and slug catching, dehydration with glycol and molecular sieves, hydrate prevention, sweetening with amines, sulphur recovery, dew point control and NGL recovery, and compression. For every process the course covers the principles, the key operating variables and the problems operators meet most often. The result is a practical, plant-level understanding that supports safer operation and better troubleshooting.

Objectives

  • Explain gas composition, phase behaviour and sales gas specifications
  • Describe inlet separation and liquid handling facilities
  • Compare glycol and molecular sieve dehydration and their operating limits
  • Predict hydrate formation and select prevention methods
  • Explain amine sweetening and sulphur recovery processes
  • Describe dew point control and NGL recovery options
  • Troubleshoot common gas plant operating problems

Who should attend

Gas plant operators and supervisors, process and production engineers, facilities engineers, and technical staff working in gas processing, gas gathering or LNG feed gas treatment.

Training methodology

Each process is explained with block diagrams, phase envelopes and real operating data, followed by short hand calculations that build confidence with the numbers. Participants work in teams on troubleshooting scenarios drawn from operating plants, such as foaming in an amine contactor or a wet molecular sieve bed. Videos and equipment photographs connect the theory to the plant. Daily recap sessions and a final assessment check progress. A troubleshooting guide covering the most frequent gas plant problems is provided for later use.
