Overview
A modern refinery is a tightly linked system in which every unit depends on the ones upstream and feeds the ones downstream. Running it well requires people who understand not only their own unit but the whole flow of crude to finished product. This course provides that understanding. It begins with crude oil properties and assays, explains how refineries are configured to match crude slates and product demand, and then walks through the main process units: atmospheric and vacuum distillation, hydrotreating, catalytic reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, hydrocracking, coking and the units that recover sulphur and treat products. Participants also study product specifications, blending, utilities and the safety and environmental controls that apply to refinery operations. Practical examples show how operating decisions influence yields, energy use, product quality and margins.
Objectives
- Interpret crude oil assays and key crude properties
- Explain how refinery configuration matches crude slate and product demand
- Describe the purpose, chemistry and key variables of the main conversion and treating units
- Relate operating variables to yields and product quality
- Explain product specifications and blending principles
- Identify the main safety and environmental hazards in refinery operations
- Understand how operating decisions affect refinery margins
Who should attend
Refinery operators, shift supervisors and panel operators, process and production engineers, planners, laboratory staff and newly appointed technical personnel who need a complete overview of refinery operations.
Training methodology
The course combines clear process explanations with simplified flow diagrams, operating data and photographs from operating refineries. Participants follow a single crude barrel through the refinery during the week, calculating yields and tracking how each unit changes its composition. Troubleshooting scenarios are discussed in small groups, drawing on the experience of operators in the room. Short quizzes reinforce learning each day, and a final assessment confirms overall understanding. Participants also receive a unit-by-unit reference guide summarising key variables and their typical effects.
