Overview
When a fire, gas release, well control event or security threat occurs, the first hour decides how far the incident spreads and how the company is judged afterwards. Organisations that respond well have plans that people know, clear roles, practised communication and leaders who can make decisions under pressure. This course covers emergency response and crisis management as one connected system, from the on-scene response at a facility to the corporate crisis team. Participants learn how to assess emergency scenarios, write practical response plans, organise incident command, coordinate with authorities and mutual aid, and manage communications with families, media and stakeholders. The course also covers business continuity and recovery, and the human side of crisis leadership: situational awareness, decision making under stress and team welfare. Exercises are built around realistic oil and gas scenarios in the Gulf and international operations.
Objectives
- Identify credible emergency scenarios and the resources each requires
- Structure emergency response and crisis management plans
- Apply incident command principles and define clear roles
- Coordinate with emergency services, authorities and mutual aid
- Manage crisis communications with media, families and stakeholders
- Make sound decisions under time pressure and uncertainty
- Plan exercises, drills and post-incident reviews
Who should attend
Emergency response coordinators, HSE managers, operations and site managers, incident commanders, security staff and members of corporate crisis management teams.
Training methodology
The course is highly practical. Participants review and improve sample emergency plans, then take roles in an incident command structure during a series of escalating tabletop exercises based on a gas plant fire and an offshore incident. A simulated press conference gives each participant practice in facing the media. Recordings of real crisis communications are analysed for what worked and what did not. Each exercise ends with a structured debrief and lessons learned.
