Overview

A HAZOP study is only as good as the team that performs it and the person who leads it. A well-run study uncovers credible hazards and operability problems before they reach the plant, while a poorly run one produces long worksheets and little insight. This course prepares engineers to lead HAZOP studies with confidence. It covers the method itself, including nodes, design intent, guidewords, deviations, causes, consequences and safeguards, and then concentrates on the skills that separate an effective leader from a scribe: preparing the study, selecting and managing the team, keeping discussions focused, judging when enough has been said, and producing clear, actionable recommendations. Participants also learn how HAZOP links to LOPA, SIL determination and management of change, and how to follow actions through to closure.

Objectives

  • Explain the HAZOP method and where it fits among hazard identification techniques
  • Prepare a HAZOP study, including scope, nodes and documentation
  • Apply guidewords systematically to identify credible deviations
  • Assess causes, consequences and safeguards realistically
  • Lead and facilitate a multidisciplinary HAZOP team
  • Write clear, actionable recommendations and manage their close-out
  • Link HAZOP findings to LOPA, SIL assessment and management of change

Who should attend

Process and safety engineers, operations and maintenance supervisors, project engineers, and experienced HAZOP team members preparing to act as study leaders or scribes.

Training methodology

Most of the week is spent doing rather than listening. After a concise review of the method, participants take turns as leader, scribe and team members in simulated HAZOP sessions on real P&IDs from oil, gas and chemical facilities. The instructor plays difficult participants and introduces realistic challenges, then gives individual feedback on facilitation. Sessions are recorded on standard worksheets so that participants practise documentation as well as leadership. A practical leadership assessment ends the course.
