Overview

Environmental performance now shapes licences to operate, access to finance and public reputation as much as safety does. Oil and gas companies are expected to understand their environmental aspects, comply with tightening regulations, and demonstrate continual improvement. This course gives participants the knowledge and tools to do that across the life of an asset. It covers environmental impact assessment, the main sources of air emissions, effluents and waste in upstream and downstream operations, and the technologies used to reduce them. Particular attention is given to flaring, methane and greenhouse gas management, produced water, oil spill prevention and contaminated land. The programme then shows how an ISO 14001 management system, monitoring programmes and stakeholder engagement turn environmental policy into everyday practice on site.

Objectives

  • Identify the environmental aspects and impacts of oil and gas operations
  • Explain the stages and content of an environmental impact assessment
  • Describe technologies to reduce air emissions, flaring and methane
  • Apply good practice in produced water, effluent and waste management
  • Implement the key elements of an ISO 14001 environmental management system
  • Design environmental monitoring and reporting programmes
  • Engage effectively with regulators and communities on environmental issues
  • Integrate environmental considerations into project and operational decisions

Who should attend

HSE and environmental professionals, operations and facility managers, project engineers, environmental coordinators, and regulators or consultants working with the oil and gas industry.

Training methodology

Each topic is introduced with regulatory context and industry data, then explored through case studies from Middle East, European and international operations. Participants carry out an aspects and impacts register for a sample facility, calculate emissions from flaring and venting, and review an environmental monitoring report. Group discussions compare approaches across companies and jurisdictions. The week ends with each team presenting an environmental improvement plan, followed by a written assessment.
