Overview
ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems, and many energy companies and their contractors now hold or are working towards certification. The standard is not a set of safety rules; it is a framework for planning, leading and continually improving how an organisation controls its health and safety risks. Getting value from it means understanding its intent, not only its clauses. This course explains ISO 45001 clause by clause, with practical guidance on how each requirement is met in oil, gas and industrial operations. Participants study the context of the organisation, leadership and worker participation, hazard identification and risk assessment, legal requirements, operational controls, contractor management, emergency preparedness, performance evaluation and improvement. The course also covers the high-level structure shared with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, integrated management systems, and how to prepare for and pass certification audits.
Objectives
- Explain the purpose and structure of ISO 45001
- Interpret each clause in the context of energy and industrial operations
- Apply hazard identification and risk assessment methods that meet the standard
- Establish worker consultation and participation arrangements
- Develop objectives, operational controls and contractor management processes
- Plan internal audits and management reviews
- Integrate ISO 45001 with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
- Prepare an organisation for certification audit
Who should attend
HSE managers and advisers, management system coordinators, internal auditors, operations managers and supervisors involved in developing or maintaining an ISO 45001 system.
Training methodology
Each clause is explained with examples from operating companies and contractors, then applied in a short exercise on a fictional oil and gas services company. Participants draft a policy statement, a risk register extract, an objectives plan and an internal audit checklist. A gap analysis exercise compares the fictional company's current practices with the standard. Mock audit interviews give practice from both the auditor's and auditee's side, and the course closes with a written assessment.
