Overview

HAZID is usually the first structured hazard study on a project, carried out at concept or FEED stage when layout, process choices and safety philosophy can still be changed cheaply. A well-run HAZID shapes the whole safety case that follows; a poorly run one produces a long list of generic hazards that nobody uses. This course develops the skills needed to lead and record effective HAZID studies for oil, gas and process projects and for operating facilities. Participants learn how to prepare the study, select guidewords and nodes, assemble the right team, and facilitate discussion so that real hazards, credible causes and practical recommendations emerge. The course covers risk ranking, recording with worksheet software, managing difficult team dynamics and following recommendations through to close-out. It also explains how HAZID links to ENVID, HAZOP, layout studies and quantitative risk assessment.

Objectives

  • Explain the purpose of HAZID and its place in the project life cycle
  • Prepare a study: scope, nodes, guidewords and documents
  • Select and brief an effective study team
  • Facilitate discussion to identify credible hazards and causes
  • Rank risks and record findings clearly
  • Write actionable recommendations and manage close-out
  • Link HAZID results to other safety studies

Who should attend

Process safety and HSE engineers, project engineers, technical safety specialists and experienced engineers who will lead, record or take part in HAZID studies.

Training methodology

Participants take turns as facilitator, scribe and team members in live HAZID sessions on a gas processing project at FEED stage and an existing tank terminal. Each session is reviewed against a facilitation checklist, with feedback on questioning, time control and recording quality. Examples of good and poor worksheets are compared. Short role plays address difficult situations such as dominant participants and off-topic discussions, and the course ends with a facilitated session assessed by the trainer.
