Overview
Gas turbines drive compressors, pumps and generators across oil and gas production, pipelines, LNG and power plants, and an unplanned trip can stop an entire facility. Keeping them available depends on operators and maintenance staff who understand how the machine works, what limits its performance and how problems show up long before a failure. This course covers industrial and aero-derivative gas turbines from first principles to maintenance practice. Participants learn the Brayton cycle, the function of compressors, combustors and turbine sections, and the auxiliary systems for fuel, lube oil, air intake and control. The course explains performance monitoring, the effects of ambient temperature and fouling, compressor washing, borescope inspection and hot section life. Common problems such as vibration, combustion dynamics, high exhaust temperature spread and trips are examined through real cases, together with maintenance planning and overhaul strategies.
Objectives
- Explain the Brayton cycle and gas turbine performance parameters
- Describe the main sections and auxiliary systems of a gas turbine
- Monitor performance and recognise degradation
- Apply compressor washing, inlet filtration and fuel quality practices
- Plan borescope inspections and hot section maintenance
- Troubleshoot vibration, combustion and control problems
Who should attend
Rotating equipment and maintenance engineers, gas turbine operators and technicians, reliability engineers and supervisors in oil and gas, LNG and power facilities.
Training methodology
Cutaway drawings, animations and borescope videos are used to explain each section of the machine. Participants calculate performance corrections for ambient conditions and estimate the benefit of compressor washing from operating data. Trend data from turbine trips and vibration events are analysed in groups to find root causes. Overhaul reports are reviewed to show typical hot section damage, and every day ends with a short quiz or troubleshooting case. Participants are encouraged to bring examples from their own plants.
