Overview

Many maintenance programmes grow by habit: tasks are added after every failure and rarely removed, and the result is high cost without a matching gain in reliability. Reliability-centred maintenance offers a disciplined alternative. It starts from what each asset must do in its operating context, asks how it can fail and what happens when it does, and then selects the maintenance task that deals with each failure mode most effectively. This course teaches the RCM process in line with SAE JA1011 and shows how to apply it pragmatically in oil, gas and process plants. Participants learn to define functions and failures, carry out FMEA, use decision logic to choose between condition-based, time-based, failure-finding and run-to-failure strategies, and turn the results into a maintenance plan that the organisation can sustain.

Objectives

  • Explain the principles of RCM and the requirements of SAE JA1011
  • Define asset functions, performance standards and functional failures
  • Carry out a failure modes and effects analysis
  • Assess failure consequences for safety, environment and production
  • Apply RCM decision logic to select maintenance strategies
  • Calculate basic reliability measures such as MTBF and availability
  • Implement and sustain an RCM-based maintenance programme

Who should attend

Maintenance and reliability engineers, maintenance planners and supervisors, operations engineers, asset managers, and technical staff participating in RCM or maintenance optimisation studies.

Training methodology

The course uses a single realistic system, such as a pump train or compressor package, as a running case. Participants define its functions, build an FMEA and work through the RCM decision diagram in small teams, with the instructor facilitating as in a real review. Short exercises introduce reliability calculations using simple data. Examples from operating plants show how RCM results were implemented and where programmes stalled. The course closes with a team review of the completed analysis and an assessment.
