Overview
Corrosion is the single largest cause of integrity failures in oil and gas facilities, and controlling it requires engineers, inspectors and operators to work from the same understanding. This course explains why metals corrode in production, processing and transport systems, and how the industry prevents, monitors and inspects for that damage. Participants study the electrochemistry of corrosion and the specific mechanisms found in the sector, including CO2 and H2S corrosion, microbiologically influenced corrosion, erosion, and environmental cracking. The programme then covers the main control methods: material selection, coatings, cathodic protection and chemical inhibition. Finally, it addresses inspection techniques, corrosion monitoring and the data management that turns measurements into decisions. Throughout, emphasis is placed on recognising damage in the field and choosing cost-effective responses.
Objectives
- Explain the electrochemical basis of corrosion
- Identify the corrosion and cracking mechanisms common in oil and gas
- Select materials suitable for corrosive and sour service
- Describe the use of coatings, cathodic protection and inhibitors
- Choose suitable inspection and monitoring techniques
- Interpret corrosion data to support integrity decisions
Who should attend
Corrosion, materials and integrity engineers, inspection engineers and technicians, maintenance and operations engineers, and chemical treatment specialists in oil, gas and process facilities.
Training methodology
Theory is kept practical through photographs of real damage, failed components and inspection results from operating facilities. Participants calculate corrosion rates, select materials for a set of service conditions using recognised standards such as NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, and interpret monitoring and inspection data in groups. Each mechanism is linked to field examples so participants learn to recognise it on site. A final case study integrates prevention, monitoring and inspection, followed by an assessment.
