Overview

Variable frequency drives are now standard on pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors in oil, gas and industrial plants, where they save energy, reduce mechanical stress and give precise process control. They also introduce new problems: harmonics, motor bearing currents, insulation stress, cooling failures and nuisance trips that can be hard to diagnose without a good understanding of how the drive works. This course gives engineers and technicians that understanding. Participants learn power electronics basics, drive topologies including six-pulse, twelve-pulse and active front end, and control methods from V/f to vector and direct torque control. The course covers drive selection and sizing, motor compatibility, cable and earthing practice, harmonic mitigation to IEEE 519, and energy savings calculations. Practical sessions focus on parameter setting, commissioning, fault codes and troubleshooting, and on the maintenance that keeps drives reliable in hot and dusty environments.

Objectives

  • Explain how a VFD converts and controls power
  • Compare drive topologies and control methods
  • Select and size drives for pumps, fans and compressors
  • Apply correct cabling, earthing and motor protection practices
  • Assess and mitigate harmonics
  • Set parameters and commission a drive
  • Diagnose drive faults and plan preventive maintenance
  • Calculate energy savings from speed control

Who should attend

Electrical and instrument engineers and technicians, maintenance engineers, energy efficiency staff and project engineers who specify, commission or maintain variable frequency drives.

Training methodology

Hands-on work with a drive and motor training set allows participants to set parameters, run the motor under different control modes and observe the effect on current and torque. Harmonic measurements are demonstrated with a power quality analyser. Participants calculate energy savings for a pump application and size a drive and harmonic filter for a sample installation. Real fault logs are used for troubleshooting exercises, and the course closes with a practical and written assessment.
