Overview
Every modern process plant depends on instruments to measure what is happening and on control systems to keep it where it should be. When measurements drift or loops are badly tuned, the result is lost production, wasted energy and, in the worst cases, unsafe conditions. This course provides a practical foundation in process measurement and control for oil, gas and petrochemical facilities. It covers the measurement of pressure, level, flow and temperature, the selection and installation of transmitters, and the role of analysers. Participants then learn how control loops work, how PID controllers behave, and how control valves and actuators complete the loop. The programme also introduces control system architecture, alarm management and the boundary between basic process control and safety instrumented systems.
Objectives
- Explain measurement principles for pressure, level, flow and temperature
- Select and install transmitters for typical process applications
- Read instrument datasheets, loop diagrams and P&ID symbols
- Describe control loop elements and PID control action
- Explain control valve characteristics, sizing and actuators
- Describe DCS and PLC architecture and alarm management basics
- Distinguish basic process control from safety instrumented functions
Who should attend
Instrument and control technicians and engineers, process engineers, panel operators, maintenance staff and project engineers who work with process instrumentation and control systems.
Training methodology
Each measurement technology is presented with its principle, typical installations and common errors, using photographs and manufacturer data. Participants read loop diagrams and P&IDs, select instruments for given process conditions, and use a dynamic simulation to observe how loops respond to tuning changes and disturbances. Troubleshooting exercises are based on real problems reported by operators. The course ends with an integrated exercise on a separator control system and a short assessment.
