Overview
Every reservoir calculation, from reserves and material balance to well test analysis and simulation, depends on knowing how the reservoir fluids behave as pressure and temperature change. Errors in PVT data lead directly to wrong recovery estimates, poorly designed facilities and missed opportunities for gas injection or EOR. This course explains reservoir fluid properties and PVT analysis for engineers who use the data rather than produce it in the laboratory. Participants learn the five reservoir fluid types and their phase diagrams, sampling methods and how to judge whether a sample is representative. They study the main laboratory experiments, including constant composition expansion, differential liberation, separator tests and constant volume depletion, and how the results are used to calculate formation volume factors, solution gas-oil ratio, viscosity and compressibility. The course closes with correlations, equation of state tuning and quality checks of PVT reports.
Objectives
- Classify reservoir fluids using phase diagrams and field data
- Plan fluid sampling and assess sample representativity
- Explain the main PVT laboratory experiments and their outputs
- Calculate formation volume factors, Rs, compressibility and viscosity
- Apply PVT correlations when laboratory data are limited
- Understand equation of state models and their tuning
- Check PVT reports for consistency and errors
Who should attend
Reservoir, production and petroleum engineers, geoscientists and simulation engineers who use fluid data in their work.
Training methodology
Participants work with real PVT reports for a black oil, a volatile oil and a gas condensate. They classify each fluid, check sampling conditions, calculate fluid properties from laboratory data and compare them with correlations. Consistency checks such as the Hoffman plot and material balance on the experiments are carried out in groups. A simple equation of state model is tuned in a spreadsheet to show the effect of each parameter. Each day closes with a short quiz.
