Overview
Every modern oil, gas and process facility is run through a layered set of control systems: PLCs on packaged equipment, a distributed control system for the main process, SCADA for pipelines and remote sites, and an emergency shutdown system that must act independently when everything else fails. Engineers and technicians who understand how these systems are built, how they communicate and how they differ can diagnose problems faster and work more safely. This course explains the architecture, hardware, software and operation of PLC, DCS, SCADA and ESD systems. Participants learn about controllers, input and output modules, redundancy, networks and protocols, HMI design and alarm management, and the separation required between control and safety functions. The course also covers configuration and programming basics, maintenance and diagnostics, bypass management and the cybersecurity issues that now affect every control system.
Objectives
- Compare the roles and architectures of PLC, DCS, SCADA and ESD systems
- Describe controller, I/O, power and redundancy arrangements
- Explain industrial networks and communication protocols
- Read and write basic ladder logic and function block programs
- Apply good HMI and alarm management practice
- Explain the separation of control and safety functions
- Diagnose common hardware and communication faults
- Manage bypasses, changes and cybersecurity on control systems
Who should attend
Instrument and control engineers and technicians, electrical engineers, control room supervisors and operators, and project engineers working with automation systems.
Training methodology
The course combines explanation with hands-on work on PLC and DCS simulation software. Participants write and test simple ladder logic and function block programs, configure a control loop, build a basic HMI screen and simulate a shutdown sequence. System architecture drawings from real facilities are reviewed to identify single points of failure. Fault-finding exercises use diagnostic screens and network status data, and the course ends with a practical and written assessment.
