Overview
Marine terminals are where crude oil, products, LPG and LNG leave the plant and enter world trade, and every loading operation brings together the ship, the terminal, the cargo owner and surveyors under tight time pressure. The loading master is at the centre of this activity, responsible for safe mooring, the ship-shore interface, cargo transfer and documentation. This course gives terminal staff and loading masters the knowledge to run cargo operations safely and efficiently. Participants learn terminal layouts, berth and jetty equipment, marine loading arms and hoses, mooring systems and the ship-shore safety checklist from ISGOTT. The course covers cargo calculations, quantity and quality measurement, ballast and vapour handling, emergency shutdown links between ship and shore, and the causes of common incidents such as overflows, breakaways and static discharge. Commercial aspects, including notices of readiness, letters of protest and documentation, are also explained.
Objectives
- Describe marine terminal layouts, berth equipment and mooring systems
- Apply ISGOTT and the ship-shore safety checklist
- Plan and supervise safe loading and discharge operations
- Carry out cargo quantity calculations and verify measurements
- Manage ship-shore communication and emergency shutdown links
- Prevent and respond to overflows, breakaways and static hazards
- Prepare commercial and operational cargo documentation
Who should attend
Loading masters, terminal operators and supervisors, marine superintendents, cargo inspectors and staff involved in oil, LPG and LNG export and import terminals.
Training methodology
Participants work through a complete cargo operation for a crude tanker at a sample terminal: pre-arrival planning, mooring analysis, the ship-shore safety checklist, loading plan, cargo calculations and final documentation. Real tank tables and ullage reports are used for calculation exercises. Incident videos and investigation reports on terminal overflows and hose failures are analysed. Role plays practise the pre-transfer meeting between loading master and ship's officers, and a written assessment closes the course.
