Overview

Pipeline failures are rare, but when they happen the consequences for people, the environment and the business can be severe. Integrity management is the discipline that keeps those failures rare. This course explains how operators identify the threats to their pipelines, assess the risk each segment poses, and choose the inspection, monitoring and mitigation measures that keep risk at an acceptable level. Participants study the main threat categories, including internal and external corrosion, third-party damage, cracking, geohazards and operational errors. They then learn how in-line inspection, direct assessment and hydrotesting work, how defects are assessed for fitness-for-service, and how repair decisions are made. The final part of the week links these technical activities into a documented integrity management system with clear responsibilities, performance measures and continuous improvement.

Objectives

  • Identify the main threats to pipeline integrity
  • Apply risk assessment methods to pipeline segments
  • Select inspection methods including in-line inspection and direct assessment
  • Interpret in-line inspection results and assess defects
  • Choose suitable repair and mitigation options
  • Develop the key elements of a pipeline integrity management plan
  • Define integrity performance indicators and reporting
  • Relate integrity activities to international codes and standards

Who should attend

Pipeline engineers, integrity and corrosion engineers, inspection personnel, pipeline operations supervisors, and asset managers responsible for onshore or offshore pipeline systems.

Training methodology

The programme blends structured lectures with worked examples based on recognised codes such as ASME B31.8S and API 1160. Participants assess risk on a sample pipeline network, review real in-line inspection data and calculate the remaining strength of corroded sections. Failure investigations from around the world are analysed to draw out lessons. Group work leads to an outline integrity management plan, and a final assessment completes the course. Participants also receive templates for a threat register and an integrity plan outline.
