Overview

Energy is one of the largest controllable costs in refineries, gas plants, petrochemical complexes and other industrial facilities, and it is also the main source of their emissions. Even well-run plants typically have savings of 10 to 20 percent available through better operation, maintenance and targeted investment. Finding those savings requires a structured audit and the skills to turn findings into projects that management will fund. This course teaches how to plan and carry out energy audits and build an energy efficiency programme in line with ISO 50001 and ISO 50002. Participants learn energy balances, metering and baselines, and how to assess the main energy users: boilers and steam systems, furnaces and heaters, compressed air, pumps and fans, motors and drives, cooling and HVAC, and heat recovery. The course then covers calculating savings, financial evaluation of projects, measurement and verification, and keeping the programme going.

Objectives

  • Plan and conduct energy audits in line with ISO 50002
  • Build energy balances, baselines and performance indicators
  • Assess efficiency of boilers, steam systems, furnaces and heaters
  • Identify savings in compressed air, pumps, fans, motors and cooling
  • Evaluate heat recovery and process integration opportunities
  • Calculate savings and evaluate projects financially
  • Apply measurement and verification and the ISO 50001 management system

Who should attend

Energy managers and engineers, process, utility and maintenance engineers, plant managers and sustainability staff in industrial facilities.

Training methodology

Participants carry out a desk audit of a sample industrial facility using real-style operating data. They build an energy balance, calculate boiler and furnace efficiency, find losses in steam traps, compressed air leaks and oversized pumps, and estimate savings. Each opportunity is evaluated with payback and net present value in a spreadsheet. Teams prioritise their findings and present an audit report and action plan on the final day. Participants are encouraged to bring data from their own facilities.
