Overview

Drilling fluids do far more than carry cuttings to surface. They control formation pressure, keep the wellbore stable, cool and lubricate the bit, protect the reservoir and transmit data from downhole tools. A poorly designed or poorly maintained mud system lies behind many stuck pipe, lost circulation and well control incidents, and behind formation damage that lowers production for the life of the well. This course covers drilling fluid technology from basic properties to field management. Participants learn the functions of drilling fluids, water-based, oil-based and synthetic systems, and the role of each additive. They practise the standard API mud tests and learn how to interpret them, then apply rheology and hydraulics to hole cleaning, equivalent circulating density and surge and swab. The course also covers solids control, shale inhibition, lost circulation treatment, reservoir drill-in fluids, mud-related problems and environmental handling of drilling wastes.

Objectives

  • Explain the functions and key properties of drilling fluids
  • Compare water-based, oil-based and synthetic mud systems
  • Perform and interpret standard API mud tests
  • Apply rheology and hydraulics to hole cleaning and ECD
  • Manage solids control and mud maintenance
  • Prevent and treat shale instability and lost circulation
  • Select drill-in fluids that minimise formation damage
  • Handle drilling wastes in line with environmental requirements

Who should attend

Drilling engineers and supervisors, mud engineers, wellsite geologists, completion engineers and rig personnel who need a sound understanding of drilling fluids.

Training methodology

Laboratory demonstrations show the standard mud tests, including mud balance, Marsh funnel, viscometer, filtration and retort analysis, and participants interpret the results to recommend treatments. Hydraulics and ECD calculations are carried out for sample well sections. Daily mud reports from real wells are reviewed to identify developing problems. Case studies of stuck pipe, losses and formation damage link fluid properties to well outcomes, and a final team exercise designs the fluid programme for a sample well.
