Overview

Energy companies now face detailed questions about their emissions from investors, lenders, customers and regulators. National oil companies in the Gulf have published net zero targets, international buyers ask for the carbon intensity of every cargo, and new disclosure rules such as the ISSB standards and the EU CSRD make sustainability reporting as important as financial reporting. Reliable numbers depend on sound carbon accounting. This course explains how to measure, manage and report greenhouse gas emissions and wider ESG performance in oil, gas and power companies. Participants learn the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064, organisational and operational boundaries, Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and the quantification of flaring, venting, fugitive methane and combustion. The course then covers emission factors, data management and verification, carbon intensity metrics, ESG frameworks and ratings, climate-related disclosures, and how to build a credible decarbonisation and reporting roadmap.

Objectives

  • Apply the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064 to energy operations
  • Set organisational and operational boundaries
  • Quantify Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions including methane
  • Manage emissions data, quality control and verification
  • Calculate and benchmark carbon intensity metrics
  • Explain the main ESG frameworks, ratings and disclosure standards
  • Prepare climate-related disclosures in line with ISSB and TCFD
  • Build a decarbonisation and reporting roadmap

Who should attend

Sustainability and ESG staff, HSE and environmental engineers, energy managers, finance and investor relations staff, and managers responsible for emissions reporting.

Training methodology

Participants build a GHG inventory for a sample oil and gas company with a production site, a gas plant and a refinery. They set boundaries, select emission factors, calculate emissions by source in a spreadsheet and check the results. Published sustainability reports from energy companies are reviewed against disclosure standards, and teams draft sections of a climate disclosure. A final exercise links the inventory to a decarbonisation roadmap with targets and actions.
