Overview
Battery energy storage is growing faster than almost any other part of the energy system. Utilities use it to balance solar and wind, industrial sites use it to cut peak demand and keep critical loads running, and oil and gas operators are adding it to remote facilities to reduce diesel and gas turbine fuel use. Large solar-plus-storage projects across the Gulf have made BESS a core skill for energy engineers. This course explains how battery storage systems work and how to plan, specify and operate them. Participants learn battery chemistries with a focus on lithium iron phosphate, cell-to-system architecture, battery management systems, power conversion and energy management. The course covers sizing for different applications, degradation and warranty, grid connection requirements, fire safety and thermal runaway protection in line with NFPA 855, commissioning and operation, and the economics of storage projects.
Objectives
- Explain how lithium-ion and other battery technologies work
- Describe the architecture of a BESS from cell to grid connection
- Size storage systems for peak shaving, renewable firming and backup
- Specify battery management, power conversion and energy management systems
- Apply fire safety and thermal runaway protection requirements
- Plan commissioning, operation and performance monitoring
- Evaluate degradation, warranties and project economics
Who should attend
Electrical and energy engineers, renewable energy project staff, utility and industrial engineers, and managers evaluating or operating battery storage systems.
Training methodology
Participants size battery systems for three cases: peak shaving at an industrial site, firming output from a solar plant and backup power for a remote oil and gas facility. Spreadsheet models show how capacity, power rating and degradation interact over the project life. Data sheets and BMS screens from real systems are reviewed, and thermal runaway incidents are analysed for lessons on design and fire protection. A final team exercise compares storage options on cost and performance.
