Overview
Primavera P6 is the standard scheduling tool on most oil, gas and energy projects, and many operators require contractors to submit schedules in P6 format. Yet many users know only the basic screens and struggle to build a schedule that is logically sound, properly resourced and easy to update. This course teaches Primavera P6 Professional through hands-on practice on a realistic energy project. Participants learn the P6 data structure, enterprise project structure, calendars and project setup, then build a work breakdown structure, activities and relationships and calculate the schedule. They go on to assign resources and costs, use codes, filters, groupings and layouts, and set a baseline. The final part of the course covers updating progress, comparing against the baseline, earned value in P6, producing reports and S-curves, and checking schedule quality. Participants finish able to build and maintain a complete project schedule independently.
Objectives
- Navigate Primavera P6 and understand its data structure
- Set up projects, calendars and the enterprise structure
- Build a WBS, activities and relationships and schedule the project
- Assign resources, roles and costs
- Use codes, filters, groupings and layouts to analyse the schedule
- Set baselines, update progress and compare performance
- Produce reports and S-curves and check schedule quality
Who should attend
Planning engineers, schedulers, project engineers, project control staff and contractor personnel who prepare or review schedules in Primavera P6.
Training methodology
This is a hands-on course: every participant works on a computer with Primavera P6 and builds a complete schedule for a sample gas facility project during the week. Each topic is demonstrated by the instructor and then practised immediately. Participants update the schedule over several simulated reporting periods, analyse delays against the baseline and produce standard reports. Common scheduling errors are reviewed using sample schedules, and a practical test closes the course.
